The Consortium Marchio Storico dei Lambruschi Modenesi is born to protect Lambrusco's history and identity.
The history of Lambrusco goes back a very long way and includes the allure of the earliest testimonials penned by the poets and writers of the Classical Age (Virgil, Cato and Varro) who in their works refer to a “Labrusca vitis”, i.e. a wild vine variety that produced fruits with a bitter taste that commonly grew around the edges of the fields. Lambrusco, a red wine that can be more or less sparkling, spumante or frizzante, distinguished by a brilliant ruby red color, and served from 12-14 °C in order to take full advantage of its distinctive fragrance and olfactory notes, was created in Modena and from there it has spread to be marketed in the rest of Italy and the world.
To enjoy Lambrusco one should approach it instinctively in order to capture all its vitality when pouring it into the glass; the evanescent foam unleashes a multitude of emotions. Modena goes hand in hand with Lambrusco, they were obviously made for one another. The transparent exuberance of Lambrusco reflects the character of the local territory, from the simple, austere style of the Romanesque churches, to the succulence of the cuisine and the elegant glamour of the world-famous sports cars.
A number of various elements demonstrate the importance of Modena as a wine growing and producing region: the 8,000 hectares of vineyards; the oldest wine produced in the entire region of Emilia-Romagna; the presence of the oldest wine cooperative still operating in Italy; three wine cooperatives that have already celebrated one hundred years of operation since their founding; and, above all, the fact that wine growing and producing in Modena means “D.O.P. Lambruscos”, in other words, Denominazione di Origine Protetta (Protected Designation of Origin).
In Modena they produce Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce, Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro and Lambrusco di Modena, therefore one can safely assert, without fear of exaggerating, that Modena is the land of the D.O.P. Lambruscos.
